mitú LAUNCHES #11FOR11MILLION to Raise Funds and Awareness for U.S. Undocumented Immigrants
mitú hosts 'A Conversation with America' to discuss the lives behind immigration laws with key activists, and celebrity thought-leaders, including Cristela Alonzo and Diane Guerrero
LOS ANGELES, April 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- mitú, the leader in creating media and entertainment through a Latino lens, today launched #11FOR11MILLION, a global social movement. #11FOR11MILLION is aimed at combating fear and anxiety about deportation through knowledge, and raising funds for legal resources and advocacy for our 11 million undocumented friends, neighbors, and children in America.
Beginning today and kicking off at "A Conversation with America," an immigration town hall led by mitú and hosted by the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, mitú is asking every global citizen to donate $11 to #11FOR11MILLION with 100 percent of their donation going to the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) and United We Dream, which provide pro-bono legal services and advocacy on behalf of immigrants. In the coming months, mitú is partnering with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas and Define American to create content to support the #11FOR11MILLION campaign.
"As the voice of Latino and multicultural youth in America, it's our responsibility to leverage mitú's influence to support issues affecting our community. Empowering and inspiring through authentic storytelling is what mitú does best," said Beatriz Acevedo, co-Founder and President of mitú.
"With this campaign, we stand in solidarity with our 11 million undocumented brothers and sisters who are facing the fear and reality of deportation during these challenging times," Acevedo added.
In late February, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlined a series of policies intended to increase immigration enforcement in the US, including the following:
- Speedier deportations
- Hiring of thousands of new border patrol and immigration enforcement agents
- An increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants who can be deported through an expedited process
In response to these policies, #11FOR11MILLION will look to build a network of support for undocumented immigrants in the US aimed at helping them keep their families and communities intact.
"These are incredibly difficult times for immigrants in the US. mitú not only values the contributions of all immigrants to our country, but we also stand firm in our commitment to elevate their voices at every opportunity," said Lucy Flores, Vice President of Public Affairs at mitú.
