Mississippi Coast Coliseum And Convention Center Reopens After Major Renovation and Expansion Following Damage by Hurricane Katrina
tvsdesign Leads Architectural Team to Restore Convention Center
BILOXI, Miss., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Signs of recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina continue to happen along the Gulf Coast with the reopening of The Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, the 400,000 square foot expanded and renovated Center offers a state-of-the art exhibition, sports, meeting and banquet facility serving Mississippi, the Southeast and national markets.
The redesign was led by tvsdesign, an architectural and design firm based in Atlanta which specializes in convention centers and public assembly space. tvsdesign worked with Eley Guild Hardy Architects of Biloxi. "The design drew it's inspiration from the coastal setting - from the wave forms of the roof-line to the signature 'blue wave' wall that welcomes visitors. Inside, custom carpet and terrazzo patterns evoke the colors and movement of ocean waters and establish the finished building's place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast," said Nick Wolfcale, principal at tvsdesign.
Mississippi Governor Hailey Barbour called the new center "a great milestone for the state."
According to Bill Holmes, executive director of The Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center, "Biloxi can attract the mega-conventions with tens of thousands of participants that meeting cities crave."
Holmes kept the previous convention center open during Hurricane Katrina knowing that residents along the coast would seek shelter in the large facility. As the water rose to more than seven feet inside the facility, Holmes and about 100 residents remained safe by seeking higher ground inside the coliseum.
