DENVER, Nov. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- mindSpark Learning, a Denver-based nonprofit dedicated to re-engineering education through educators with unique professional learning experiences for both school leaders and teachers, announced today its STEMpath program was awarded a $15,000 stipend from Pathway 2 Tomorrow.
STEMpath, which launches in Colorado in January with an eye towards national expansion, began with an unprecedented partnership between mindSpark Learning, Couragion, Metropolitan State University of Denver and Colorado Succeeds. It is a 12-month graduate-level teacher certification program that provides educators with the competence, relevance and skills to teach STEM and computer science (CS), while earning 24 graduate-level credits. STEMpath fuses work-based learning through in-industry externships, graduate-level coursework and professional learning in career literacy, information science and equity-centered design thinking to provide a holistic perspective of STEM far beyond traditional skills.
This certification program was built to address the shortage of STEM/CS-qualified teachers, which directly affects the STEM work pipeline. If schools do not have enough qualified teachers, they either eliminate STEM/CS courses or offer programs lacking in holistic, real-world knowledge that is critical for workforce preparedness.
The grant from Pathway 2 Tomorrow will help mindSpark Learning meet the needs of U.S. educators, students and ultimately, future STEM employees. Pathways 2 Tomorrow directly supports STEMpath's mission to up-skill STEM and CS teachers, create relevancy and excitement for students, and ultimately increase the number of skilled students entering the STEM workforce.
"The success of our workforce demands a paradigm shift in teacher appreciation, value and preparation. STEMpath is the catalyst to this paradigm shift. It's the game-changer we've been waiting for and that our economy has been demanding," said mindSpark Learning CEO Kellie Lauth. "We are so thankful to be recognized by Pathway 2 Tomorrow, alongside the nation's top education changemakers."
