MIAMI, Dec. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Public Consulting Group (PCG) announced today that their EngageNY English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum is now being used by 12,000 grade 11 students in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The new curriculum will aid Miami-Dade educators as they work to build the skills and understandings of high school students striving to meet Florida's graduation requirements.
EngageNY ELA 6-12 is a rigorous, standards-based curriculum that combines rich literature, engaging learning experiences, and personalized scaffolding to build all students' abilities as readers, writers, and thinkers. It was originally developed by PCG for the New York State Education Department and is published by John Wiley and Sons as Paths to College and Career.
Miami-Dade is implementing the curriculum as it works to transform teacher practice and improve student achievement. Students participating in this program are those who have failed Florida's state assessments, which each student must pass as a requirement for graduation. The curriculum's concentration on close reading, writing from evidence, and thinking critically address both the Common Core State Standards and Florida's own new standards, ensuring that students build their literacy capacities and are college and career ready.
As Miami-Dade's Department of English Language Arts Administrative Team explained, "student graduation rates are an important barometer of the success our students will enjoy in college and career."
Dr. Katanna Conley, PCG Senior Associate, explained that, "PCG's curriculum gives all students, including those who had previously been excluded from challenging learning experiences, the opportunity for rigorous thinking with grade level texts."
Professional development for teachers and coaches is a critical component of this work. In a district-wide summer institute, teachers were introduced to the instructional shifts that underpin the curriculum and were given the opportunity to dig into the initial modules under the guidance of PCG's curriculum experts. To embed on-going professional development in the classroom, PCG will work with coaches and district leaders to conduct classroom walkthroughs and professional development workshops that will cement and expand teachers' instructional practices.
