Mazi Piri Piri, the Perfect Balance of Flavor & Fire, Featured in O Magazine
LITTLE SILVER, N.J., July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Once again Mazi Piri Piri, a hand-stirred artisan Portuguese sauce made in Asbury Park, New Jersey, is in the big-time spotlight!
The most recent, O Oprah Magazine, which spotlighted Mazi Piri Piri Sauce with Sickles Market, Little Silver, New Jersey, named as its single online source, in its August 2013 issue. This comes on the heels of Mazi Piri Piri being named editors' picks GrubStreet.com 2013 in Martha Stewart Whole Living 2012 and Saveur magazine in 2011.
The national attention comes as no surprise to Sickles Market's customers, who discovered the Portuguese-style condiment's saucy qualities long before any national magazine hit the newsstands. Sickles Market, which is listed as the single site for purchasing Mazi Piri Piri in all magazines, has featured the unique hot sauce on its shelves for several years now, as well as offering the product on its online store at sicklesmarket.com.
So how did the sassy sauce land on the shelves at Sickles Market, Little Silver, New Jersey? Maker Peter Mantas simply walked in and introduced himself and his sauce to Bob Sickles, third-generation owner of the century-old business, who is often seen walking the floor fielding questions from his customers.
"Although we support local products, they must meet our standard of quality. Piri Piri defines special in specialty foods. The oil-based chili sauce is the perfect balance of fire and flavor," said Bob Sickles.
Mantas fell in love with the sauce when he was a cook in Portugal. He and co-owner Leslie Feingold make the hand-made sauce with piri piri chilis, oil, lemon juice, vinegar and whiskey.
"Piri piri sauce is seen on tables everywhere in Portugal. It's like ketchup in the United States; but makers add their own special touch so each is a little different," said Mantas. He suggests using it as a marinade or straight up as a condiment with chicken, shrimp, meat, eggs, or in a Bloody Mary.
For generations customers have come to rely on Sickles Market for the latest finds, as well as tried-and-true favorites at the market and garden center in Little Silver, which is on property that has been in the Sickles family since a 1665 King's Land Grant.
