Mayor Walsh Appoints Cambridge College's Dean of Students to Boston School Committee
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mayor Martin J. Walsh appointed Regina Robinson, Dean of Student Affairs at Cambridge College to the Boston School Committee. This four-year appointment replaces the seat vacated by longtime member and former chairman, Reverend Gregory Groover, who has been with the Committee since 2007 and decided not to seek reappointment.
"I am excited to represent Cambridge College as a member of the Boston School Committee. As a parent to four children, coupled with my experiences here at the College with our diverse adult students, many of whom are parents and educators of preK-12 students, I understand firsthand the value of the classroom learning experience, the importance of developing strategies for student success, and the critical partnerships necessary to produce next generation leaders," said Regina Robinson. "I am humbled by this great opportunity and look forward to the work ahead."
Mayor Walsh stated, "[Regina] has a unique and broad perspective on education issues rooted in her experience as a parent, educator, and higher education administrator." The seven-member committee is responsible for defining the vision, mission and goals of the Boston Public Schools; establishing and monitoring the annual operating budget; hiring, managing and evaluating the Superintendent; and setting and reviewing district policies and practices to support student achievement.
As Dean of Student Affairs at Cambridge College, Ms. Robinson oversees a wide range of comprehensive programs and services designed to support student persistence, to graduate and to achieve successful transition into desired careers. Under the leadership of Deborah C. Jackson, President of Cambridge College, Dean Robinson was one of four strategic leaders representing Cambridge College in the national American Council on Education's Change and Innovation Lab (CIL), an initiative to increase postsecondary access and attainment. Cambridge College was one out of only nine institutions selected from a national pool of institutions to participate in this collaborative planning process to create tangible campus-based plans for change and innovation in higher education.
"Regina is a passionate advocate for preK-12 parents and students impacted by disability, and as an educator, administrator, and parent, she will bring an invaluable amount of distinctive expertise, resources, commitment, and compassion to the Boston Public School Committee," said Deborah C. Jackson, President of Cambridge College. "Cambridge College has a rich and deep history of serving educators both nationally and locally in the schools of Greater Boston. We are honored that a valued member of our College community has been selected to support the public schools of Boston. She will represent Cambridge College to support Mayor's Walsh's initiatives to further strengthen and improve the Boston Public Schools."
In February 2014, Dean Robinson was appointed by Mayor Walsh to serve on the BPS Superintendent Search Committee. She also serves on the Parent Advisory Council for Brigham and Women's NICU, is an executive board member of the Special Education Parents Advisory Council (SPEDPAC) and Boston School Committee's Inclusion Task Force Team to increase the practices of inclusion and to provide a voice for BPS parents. The seven members of the School Committee are Boston residents appointed by the Mayor of Boston to serve four-year staggered terms. Mayor Walsh made this appointment based on a list of candidates recommended by a 13-member Citizens Nominating Panel composed of parents, teachers, principals, and representatives of business and higher education.
Dean Robinson earned a B.A. in Speech Communication and a M.A. in Counseling from Liberty University in Virginia. She resides in Hyde Park, MA with her husband and four children.
