Matheson Introduces Legal Team for Appeal Process Following the Denver U.S. District Court Jury Verdict in a Racial Discrimination Case
DENVER, March 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Matheson Trucking, Inc. Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Charles J. Mellor today announced the composition of the firm's retained legal teams that will file post-trial motions later this month and handle the firm's appeal process following the February 11, 2015 U.S. District Court jury verdict in Denver awarding over $14 million in damages to plaintiffs in an alleged racial discrimination lawsuit at the firm's Matheson Flight Extenders' Denver office.
"We look forward to telling our side of the story to the public and welcome the opportunity to clear our good name," Mr. Mellor said.
The day after the verdict was announced, company CEO Mark Matheson vehemently denied the alleged charges involving seven present and former employees from 2010 to 2013 in Denver saying, "The verdict paints a negative picture and a false perception of our company and that is not who we are. Our reputation has been damaged and we intend to appeal."
Mr. Mellor said post-trial motions will be filed on March 27 as an initial step in the appeal of the verdict in the trial court.
"We are excited to have Attorneys Stacey Campbell and Dan Combs of Campbell Litigation P.C. in Denver -- an affiliate of the FordHarrison LLP national employment litigation firm -- handling our post-trial motions. Campbell Litigation's employment and labor defense trial lawyers have over 25 years of experience representing the business sector," Mellor added.
Attorney Don Willenburg, a partner in the law firm Gordon Rees Scully and Mansukhani LLP of Oakland, California and the leader of the firm's Appellate Practice Group, will handle the actual Matheson appeal. He is past chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco, and presently chair of the amicus briefs committee of the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada.
"Mr. Willenburg has extensive experience in appeals and writs involving employment related issues. We are pleased to have him as an integral member of our defense appeal team," Mr. Mellor said.
