Master Spy Publishes Novel Based on Real-Life Events
"The Zipper" chronicles tragedy and triumphs in the fight for freedom
BURBANK, Calif., July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In his new novel "The Zipper" (http://bookstore.iuniverse.com/Products/SKU-000569812/The-Cuban-Lightning.aspx), Dr. Julio Antonio Del Marmol, a former Cuban freedom fighter and spy for the global intelligence community, tells the story of an operation that he masterminded in 1988 that ultimately brought down the Berlin Wall and caused the economic collapse of the Soviet Union.
"My intention is to educate people, especially the younger generation, and wake them up to the reality of politics and politicians through stories of social, political and historical importance," said Del Marmol. "The Zipper" (iUniverse, June 2012) is his second novel and is centered around the assassination of Del Marmol's son in retaliation for the author's first book, an award-winning tell-all about the totalitarianism of the Cuban government. "I started a series of events that cost me more than I ever imagined," Del Marmol states on his website. "The Zipper" also divulges the actions he took against the hit man.
"I want my readers to have a good experience -- to laugh, cry and enjoy," Del Marmol said of his latest book. "I want them to learn about the extraordinary life of a spy and also to learn how life has been and still is in Cuba under the Castro regime. I also want them to be cautious because freedom can be slowly taken away by the government, and we must all be vigilant that this not happen to us. By educating the younger generation, I hope to leave behind a better world in which freedom is allowed to flourish, not strangled."
When asked about the relevance of his story in today's society, Del Marmol answered, "Today, many people are questioning their government. They are looking for heroes who still believe and fight for their country. This story is about corruption, patriotism, honor, deceit, friendship, love and all the things a good story has, which are relevant in today's society and many others as well."
Del Marmol's first book, titled "Cuba: Russian Roulette of America," was published in 1976 and won a 2008 award from the National Latin American Institute for Journalists for exposing the corruption and barbarities of Castro's regime.
Both books are part of Del Marmol's media franchise (http://www.spymasterspy.com) that he has dubbed "Cuban Lightning" in memory of the code name that he held as a spy. Under this project umbrella, Del Marmol has written 14 screenplays, a television series script and 12 manuscripts, all of which touch on aspects of his fight against communist dictator Fidel Castro and totalitarianism.
Del Marmol has survived 56 assassination attempts, the most recent being a car-bombing attempt in 2007. His miniseries script, "One More Attempt," details the incidents.
"The Zipper" is available at Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com in hardcover, paperback and e-book formats. It is also available in hardcover and paperback format in selected bookstores.
