NEW YORK, May 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Magisto, the cloud-based mobile video platform, today announced that through a new alliance with Discovery Digital Networks, the original web video division of Discovery Communications, consumers can now mash-up Discovery Digital Networks' video content with their own Magisto videos, marrying for the first time branded, professional video with personal video footage and photos.
This collaboration lets consumers tell their own stories mashed up with Discovery Digital Networks content, enhancing their storytelling and inserting the brand deep into consumers' personal stories.
The alliance represents a new way for Discovery Communications, the world's number one pay TV programmer, to use existing digital-native content to reach 35 million Magisto consumers in a highly engaged medium, and signifies a growing opportunity for brands to empower their customers and make them brand ambassadors.
It also offers media companies in general a new way to leverage existing content, turning viewers into co-creators of new content and converting the traditional television and online models into a collaborative exercise where viewers and producers partner to create new content.
"Magisto's user base has grown exponentially over the past year, and video storytelling is crossing into mass adoption with the base of 1.75 billion global smartphone users, as announced by eMarketer. Content owners like Discovery are recognizing the rapidly expanding potential and the new voice of personal video," said Reid Genauer, CMO of Magisto. "Discovery Digital Networks is exploring uncharted territory by opening up their expansive content library and inventing a new hybrid class of personal, video narrative. They are elevating the retelling of life experiences and redefining the role of professional media content in social media."
The announcement marks the launch of the "Wild Nature" custom Magisto theme created with proprietary Discovery Digital Networks video. The custom theme will allow Magisto users to "mash up" their personal photos and videos with nature footage from the Discovery archives, creating content that transforms personal memories and experiences into a new form of social programming.
The currently available Discovery Digital Networks video includes scenes from extreme weather and other natural phenomena. Future releases will incorporate footage of 3D life-like dinosaurs and sloths from Discovery Digital Network's upcoming Sloth Week, which debuts in June.
"Media today is about the conversation, not the megaphone. At Discovery Digital Networks, we know that engagement around our videos is as important as watching them," said Jim Louderback, GM of Discovery Digital Networks. "Curation and remixing add depth and context to our narrative in ways we never even contemplated. That's why we're so excited about working with Magisto to help our viewers co-mingle their stories with ours. And the results speak for themselves: 800,000 Discovery Digital branded travel movies created and over 5,000,000 views in just two short months!"
Magisto employs A.I. driven technology that analyzes and automatically edits and produces raw video and photos to recreate life experiences and personal memories for their vast network of 35 million users. Magisto and Discovery Digital Media launched a Discovery travel theme in January 2014, which has been used to create more than 800,000 Discovery branded travel videos, which have collectively garnered more than 5 million views.
Personal video continues to grow more robust, offering consumers much more than simple messaging apps or cumbersome editing platforms that force consumers to mimic professional videography editors and directors. Magisto, which has enjoyed skyrocketing consumer downloads in the last six months, has been at the forefront of the technological inventions, introducing features that make capturing consumers' life experiences seamless and easy.
