BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, a time to recognize a devastating and life altering eye disease that is the leading cause of blindness, severe depression and suicide in the United States.
Macular Degeneration affects people 50 years of age and older and the chances of one developing it are very high if you live long enough. Macular Degeneration is an Age Related eye disease and several factors play a key role in developing it such as: age, heredity, diet, smoking, over exposure to sunlight, high blood pressure and early menopause.
There are Two Types of Macular Degeneration "Wet" and "Dry." The Wet form of the disease only accounts for approximately 10% of those with Macular Degeneration and is the more treatable type while the Dry form makes up the other approximately 90%. There is no treatment for the dry form, however; the AREDS II Study published in May of 2013 by the National Institutes of Health proved that taking the correct nutritional supplements can offer a better chance of holding on to the vision you still have.
Macular Health, a worldwide leader in the ophthalmic nutraceutical industry based out of Birmingham, AL released one of the most innovative new delivery systems in decades for nutritional supplements known as the MacuStrip™ at the American Academy of Ophthalmology last October. With well over 40% of Americans unable to swallow pills and nursing homes complaining that many of the vitamin pills end up as a "bed pan bullet" the MacuStrip™ will offer new hope. MacuStrip™ is very similar to a dissolving breath strip however, it was developed based on the AREDS II Study and has the critical carotenoids and antioxidants one would find in many pill forms but in an easy to use mint flavored strip. By offering an easier to use delivery method patients' compliance rates should be greatly improved thus helping millions around the world save the most precious gift of all, the gift of sight says Jeffery McAnnally the company's President and CEO.
With the baby boomers being the largest and most influential segment of our society here in America we need to ensure everyone is taking the proper precautions when it comes to Macular Degeneration. Routine eye exams and proper nutrition will help to ensure everyone does their part in preserving one of, if not the most important sense of all their eye sight.
