LUGPA Celebrates National Men's Health Month by Telling Men to Man Up
WASHINGTON, May 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- LUGPA will celebrate June as the start of Men's Health Month, urging men to take control of their health by educating themselves on important health issues.
"Studies show that men are more likely to avoid going to the doctor than women, leaving them at the mercy of an unimaginable number of diseases and conditions that could have been prevented or improved if only they had talked to their doctor," said Dr. Juan Reyna, president of LUGPA. "It's time for men to man up, go to the doctor and take control of their health, which is why we've launched the Your Numbers Matter health campaign to help men engage their physicians."
Your Numbers Matter encourages men to ask their urologist to check milestone wellness numbers, such as their PSA number, testosterone level, blood pressure, body mass index and cholesterol, among others. Through the campaign, LUGPA is also working to address misinformation and mistreatment of low-testosterone (low-T) therapy, which may be led by poorly trained or informed persons, even medical professionals, which can lead to serious health problems. LUGPA is committed to the proper use and treatment of testosterone in men who are truly in need.
The initiative serves as an avenue for patients to talk frankly with their doctors about appropriate testing for prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction, overactive bladder, benign prostatic hyperplasia – and emphasizes the overall importance of general wellness.
In 2014 alone, about 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and an estimated 29,480 men will die of prostate cancer. It is critical that men participate in the conversation involving their own health.
To date, 21 LUGPA member practices throughout the country have engaged patients in Your Numbers Matter with the goal of increasing patient awareness.
LUGPA represents urology group practices in the United States, with more than 2,000 physicians who make up more than 20 percent of the nation's practicing urologists. LUGPA and its member practices are committed to best practices, research, data collection and benchmarking to promote quality clinical outcomes. For more information, visit lugpa.org.
