Local organizations partner to support homeless students in Tukwila, and raise over $33,000 to aid in hunger relief

Still Waters: Services for Families in Transition was incorporated one year ago by a member of the Tukwila community who wanted to provide relief for the abundant need there is of everyday food among students in Tukwila School District.

"I started Tukwila Weekend SnackPack in 2015, a volunteer organization which specifically targets McKinney-Vento students in the Tukwila School District," said Still Waters founder Jenny McCoy. "The students here have a great need for weekend meals, everyday clothing, school supplies, a warm place to stay at night and so much more. I thought 'there has to be something I can do to help' and so I started Still Waters."

Still Waters main focus continues to be the Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program, which provides students in the Tukwila School District with seven weekend meals that they might otherwise go without.

"The students are wonderful kids, they work hard and enjoy life even with the struggles they face," said McCoy. "Each Friday when we come to the schools to deliver these meals, we are greeted by excited, friendly faces which confirms that what we are doing is truly important."

The auction raised over $33,000 to support the Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program.

"We are overwhelmed by the wonderful support, and now we have enough donations to get us off to a great start for the next school year," said McCoy.

Students in the Tukwila School District come from a variety of backgrounds. In 2014, Tukwila School District was named the most diverse school district in the nation.

"We have a great amount of support from our community, and we are so grateful that there are organizations like Still Waters and Inspirus Credit Union, that care about our students futures and who want them to succeed," said District Superintendent Nancy Coogan.

Inspirus Credit Union supports the district through its various partnerships, such as providing students with weekend meals, donating clothing and school supplies and volunteering in the schools to support students' educational growth and fun both inside and outside of the classroom.

Inspirus Credit Union is a public donation site where community members can drop off food donations to support the students in the Tukwila School District. Donations to be dropped off at Inspirus, located at 5200 Southcenter Blvd., Seattle.
