Linde's Electronics and Specialty Gases division, located in Alpha, is a leading global supplier of a wide array of products and services, for medicine, electronics, scientific research, fiber optics, semiconductor manufacturing, environmental testing and compliance, laser applications, homeland security and lighting. The Borough of Alpha, with its population of around 2,400 people, is located in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Steve Scecchitano, shipping manager for Linde Electronics and Specialty Gases, said, "The beautification project emerged as a result of a global survey conducted by Linde that found that we had a lot of desire here at our plant in Alpha to do something in the area of social responsibility. We had a brainstorming session and the overwhelming majority voted for a project that would beautify the park, which is one of the most frequented locations in the borough. We could not have done this without the tireless efforts of over 20 of our energetic employees."
The park project included adding picnic benches, installing bike racks, tree trimming and plantings, flower beds and landscaping mulch. "We had great support from local businesses," Scecchitano said. "Harmony Compost donated all the mulch and disposal of most of the debris, and Peacefield Gardens gave us a substantial discount on all the shrubs and plants."
Scecchitano singled out Dan Altemose, halogen disposal technician for Linde Electronics and Specialty Gases, for his efforts in leading the group of volunteers on a recent Saturday. "The park was transformed literally overnight," said Altemose, who also praised Alpha Councilman Louis Cartabona for his invaluable assistance. "It wouldn't have been possible without the help of Mr.Cartabona, who acted on our behalf with the borough government and helped us secure the permits we required to do the work. He also rolled up his sleeves and worked alongside of us during the day."
Carabona said, "Alpha's Veteran Park on First Avenue is a touching memorial to the brave men and women who served our county. Linde's thoughtfulness and help, dressing up the park, honors those whose names are on the memorial plaques. We are very fortunate to have businesses like Linde who appreciate what a wonderful community we have here in Alpha."
"Thanks and congratulation to all who participated in the Park Beautification project. Everyone is extremely happy with the results; the park turned out great!" Scecchitano said.
