Lilly Singh Celebrates Her Birthday by Supporting a Global Cause with the Launch of new #GirlLove ME to WE Rafiki Bracelet
Each #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet helps provide a girl in Kenya with access to primary school education
TORONTO, Sept. 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday at WE Day Minnesota, comedian, actress and YouTube entertainer, Lilly Singh launched the #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet, her first-ever accessory piece with ME to WE, a social enterprise that creates socially-conscious products and experiences that allow people to do good through their everyday choices. Available for purchase at www.we.org/GirlLove the #GirlLove Rafiki is Lilly's continuation of #GirlLove, a social media campaign encouraging women to stop the girl-on-girl hate and start spreading the love. Every $15 purchase of a #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet will help provide a girl in Kenya with access to primary school education.
In Swahili, the word for friend is rafiki – Lilly's #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet acts as a reminder for girls to build each other up, leave behind negativity and achieve amazing things together. Lilly's bracelet is made with metallic and natural-toned beads with a delicate #GIRLLOVE silver paillette charm which acts as a daily reminder to embrace sisterhood and live WE.
"When I saw the #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet for the first time I thought it was exactly what I wanted it to be. The bracelet represents not only my passion for #GirlLove, but me acting on that passion," said Lilly Singh "In Kenya, not all girls are able to go to school and while on my ME to WE Trip, I was honoured to meet three girls currently studying at Kisaruni All Girls Secondary School. As they walked me through the Kisaruni campus, I could see how going to school has given them more than an education, but confidence and ambition. All girls should have that opportunity and that's why proceeds from my bracelet go towards giving Kenyan girls the chance to go to primary school."
ME to WE is part of the WE Movement, which brings people together and giving them the tools to change the world locally and globally, achieving transformative outcomes for themselves and others. ME to WE creates socially-conscious products and experiences including handmade ME to WE Artisans accessory pieces and ME to WE trips. Working alongside ME to WE Artisans in Kenya, Lilly designed her first-ever accessory piece drawing from beading traditions deeply-rooted in the Kenyan culture.
This summer, Lilly travelled with ME to WE to Kenya's Maasai Mara region where she immersed herself in the community and learned about its customs. In addition to Kisaruni All Girls Secondary School, Lilly visited ME to WE's Women's Empowerment Centre where she joined Kenyan mamas in a traditional beading circle. While sitting with the mamas, Lilly felt their strength as a group and saw its ripple effect in the community throughout the duration of her trip. With a sustainable income, each woman can access education, support her family or start her own business.
"The #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet is so much more than an accessory, it's empowering Kenyan mamas to earn an income, granting girls access to education and encouraging sisterhood amongst girls," said Roxanne Joyal, CEO of ME to WE. "We are so excited to be collaborating with Lilly Singh and uniting girls and women across the globe to create change."
ME to WE Artisans pieces are beautifully handcrafted by women in Kenya using traditional skills passed down through generations. Each piece celebrates heritage art forms and provides artisans with an income and the empowerment to become a respected voice in the community.
Join Lilly's mission to end girl-on-girl hate and celebrate her birthday by visiting WE.org and purchasing a #GirlLove Rafiki Bracelet.
