FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Liberty Power, the nation's largest, completely independent retail electric supplier, is proud to announce the launch of the second annual Liberty Power Bright Horizons Scholarship. The scholarship is a collaboration between Liberty Power and the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation. This alliance is focused on providing tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships annually to eligible college students pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education with an interest in seeking careers in the fields of energy or the environment.
"The inaugural year of the Bright Horizons Scholarship was a very rewarding experience for Liberty Power. We are very proud to be able to support a group of humble, hungry and smart students," said David Hernandez, co-founder and CEO of Liberty Power. "We are excited to expand our efforts to support more bright, young minds in their educational pursuits and contributions towards a more sustainable society."
Established in 2013, the Bright Horizons Scholarship was initially awarded to three winners. This year the scholarship has expanded to allow for one additional winner. A total of $20,000 will be awarded in the form of four scholarships valued at $10,000, $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000.
"After unveiling this scholarship program at our 2013 National Convention, the USHCC is proud to join Liberty Power in selecting this year's winners," said USHCC President and CEO Javier Palomarez. "I believe providing the next generation with access to a world-class education is imperative. This year's scholarships will help four deserving students realize their academic dreams – it's the right thing to do, and a sound investment in the future."
The winners of this year's Bright Horizons Scholarship will be announced at the USHCC National Convention on September 21-23 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
"Through the Bright Horizon's Scholarship, the USHCC and Liberty Power are opening doors of opportunity for our nation's most gifted students," said USHCC Chairman of the Board Marc Rodriguez. "The global economy continues to change, but as long as we encourage our youth to pursue a higher education, their futures will remain promising and the United States will continue to prosper as an economic superpower."
Students who are currently enrolled in an accredited two or four-year university that have an interest in the field of energy or the environment are welcome to apply by July 15, 2014.
