Liberal Group's Name-Calling Thwarts Real Immigration Reform
America's Voice Speaks for Liberals, not Latinos
WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, a leading voice for Latinos, today slammed America's Voice, an advocacy group, for politicizing the immigration debate through "false and vicious" attacks on Republican leaders.
Last week, the group gave Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) the “Biggest Hypocrite on Immigration Award” for talking “a good game about the need for common sense immigration reform” but “consistently oppose[ing] reform in Congress."
"To say that Senator Cornyn has not worked hard to build bipartisan consensus to fix our immigration laws is an outright lie. And to try to say that he's an anti-immigrant zealot is frankly insulting, not only to the Senator, but to all of us who know him and have worked with him throughout the years on common sense immigration reform," said Alfonso Aguilar, Executive Director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles. "Senator Cornyn has always been a strong leader on immigration, working tirelessly to find ways to fix our dysfunctional immigration system.
"These comments do nothing to advance the cause of immigration reform. Everyone knows that the only way to address this issue is through strong bipartisan efforts. These kinds of statements only serve to poison the well and create more confrontation.
"It appears that Frank Sharry and America's Voice are more committed to the broader far-left democratic agenda than to immigrants. President Obama and his supporters would rather politicize the issue than sit down with Republicans to find solutions to our immigration crisis," said Mr. Aguilar.
"What Sharry and other liberals don't realize is that the Latino voters are tired of Democrats pandering to them saying that they are committed to immigration reform and then doing nothing when they get into office," said Mr. Aguilar. "If Mr. Sharry wants to talk about hypocrisy, he should begin with President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who in the '08 campaign promised Latinos that they would work on immigration the first year of the new administration and then didn't lift a finger to deal with this issue."
The Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles promotes conservative values and ideals within the Latino community and works to integrate Latinos into fuller and more active participation and leadership in the conservative movement. It is an initiative of The American Principles Project, a 501(c)(3) organization.
