SALT LAKE CITY, March 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Food Storage, a manufacturer of gourmet meals for food storage and emergency use, today introduced five-gallon boxes to help safely and efficiently store the most important – and often overlooked—emergency item: water. The heavy-duty cardboard boxes – with thick, BPS-free plastic bags inside—are simple to fill and much easier to stack than the 55-gallon blue water barrels often used for emergency water storage.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends storing one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. According to Legacy Food Storage CEO Phil Cox, for cooking, cleaning and drinking, one gallon "simply isn't enough."
"Water is essential in emergency situations, but people often forget to include it when preparing their emergency kits – or they just don't store enough," Cox said. "At Legacy, we want to make storing water as easy as possible so our customers will make sure they have it when they need it. We don't want anyone stuck in a major snowstorm, pipes frozen, with no safe and fresh water."
The water boxes stack perfectly on top of each other to maximize storage, weigh 40 pounds once filled, and have a built-in spigot for easy water access. They boxes also keep sunlight from penetrating the water pouch, extending the shelf life of the water and the pouch.
Single boxes (with bag and filling hose) retail for $20 at both http://www.preparewise.com and http://www.buyemergencyfoods.com. The kits, which include multiple cardboard boxes/bags/filling hoses, as well as Aquamira 2-part water treatment droplets, come in the following:
- 30 Gallons (1 Month) - $68.00
- 60 Gallons (2 Months) - $98.00
- 120 Gallons (4 Months) - $190.00
- 180 Gallons (6 Months) - $260.00
- 360 Gallons (12 Months) - $480.00
- 1440 Gallons (1 Year - 4 People) - $1800.00
Water Storage Tips
According to Cox, here are a few things to consider when storing water:
- Store water in food-grade containers (but not juice or milk cartons, as the sugar will have created bacteria growth).
- Store water only in containers that have been thoroughly sanitized first.
- Store water away from heat and light.
- Rotate self-bottled water every six months; store-bottled water every 12 months.
- If purifying large quantities of water, use purifying tablets, boil water for one to two minutes or add 16 drops of liquid bleach to one gallon of water.
