La Scolca Vineyard Concludes its September Harvest for 2014: Favourable Weather Promises a High Quality Vintage
GAVI, Italy, October 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Expectations for La Scolca's 2014 vintage are high as the screw has not been under specific stress so that the grapes are beautifully healthy with a good sugar content and stable acidity. The weather this year has also played its part. A summer characterized by frequent rains necessitated meticulous attention to the raw material, with constant monitoring and timely treatments in the vineyard. This was followed by the intense heat of September, lasting until nearly the end of the month, which promoted an accelerated maturation.

The harvest at La Scolca is always carefully conducted and scheduled to capture the perfect moment of ripeness - so different from vineyard to vineyard, due to the 'age' of the soil, and the unique microclimates of each. This year the low nighttime temperatures, dry climate and moderate winds favored an early harvest at La Scolca. Indeed, the 2014 vintage at La Scolca started one week in advance compared to the average of the area of Gavi. This allowed the harvest to start under the most favorable of conditions: taking advantage of the marine breeze coming off the Ligurian Sea which dried the soil and climate. This advance also protected the grapes from the risk of the first symptoms of decay of the skins which often occurs once the temperature begins to drop and the first autumn rainfalls begin.
Chiara Soldati comments: "This 2014 vintage is really special because it encapsulates our mission to combine tradition, modernity, innovation and a great passion for wine." The classic Gavi wine was invented at La Scolca in 1919 and continues to be a focus of the Soldati family who believe strongly in its unique traditional characteristics, but they also continue to innovate.
The winemaking system at La Scolca allows a respect for the origin of grapes by making wine separately, using a computerized control system that prevents the "mixing" of musts and separates "fractions" of pressure and different origins. Diam Cork is now used in production. The wine-making plant's washing system heats to 80°C, ensuring the removal of all bacteria and preserving the integrity of every single fruit.
Chiara Soldati is proud of the vineyard's winemaking pedigree: "Throughout the years La Scolca has consistently selected a GAVI wine that arrives on tables all over the world still fresh, fruity and defined by its special qualities. It is a wine of "emotion" that gives everybody a complex and unique feeling."
