KPMG San Diego Celebrates 50th Anniversary

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In 1961, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. had a plan to grow its business -- acquire the biggest local accounting firm to break into a market.

In San Diego, Everts & Esenoff, located at 1850 Fifth Avenue near Balboa Park, met the criteria. Thus was launched KPMG San Diego and Carl Esenoff became the first managing partner. On its 15^th anniversary, the office welcomed new San Diego State University graduate David W. Down to the firm.  Today, as the office celebrates its 50^th "busy season," Down still calls San Diego and the local office home, having served as managing partner for the past 17 years.

"Over the years, I have been offered a number of transfer opportunities to serve some of the Firm's largest clients, but I have always believed I could contribute the most to KPMG by staying here, providing stability that helps an office grow," Down says.  This has enabled me to help other partners develop, mentor staff, and to positively impact client service, business development and staff development."

Down recalls the early days in San Diego, a much simpler time for the accounting profession. "All you needed in those days to go into business were paper, pencils and an adding machine and a good head on your shoulders," he says. The early clients were largely family businesses, with a lot of tax clients, but by the time I joined the Firm we were serving a diverse group of clients including those in banking, retail, and commercial real estate."

Today, KPMG San Diego serves clients in the life sciences, biotechnology, consumer markets, real estate, telecommunications, technology, and software industries. And the San Diego office, which is now located at 4747 Executive Drive, has just over 200 people compared to 90 when KPMG acquired the local business in 1961.  The office provides public and private company audit services; advisory services, including internal audit, valuation and forensic services; and federal, state and international tax services.
