In honor of the sweet and nutty new cereal and this national day of recognition, Crunchy Nut is settling the caramel debate once and for all. In a recent survey commissioned by Kellogg Company[1], 57 percent of Americans pronounce caramel with three syllables "car-a-mel". Most notably:
- People in the U.S. Southern Atlantic region most strongly prefer the "car-a-mel" pronunciation (69%) compared with a slight preference of two-syllable "car-mel" in the Midwest (52%)
- Folks in the Western U.S. are split nearly evenly between saying "car-mel" (45%) and "car-a-mel" (55%), while the East Coast region clearly prefers the three-syllable pronunciation (65%)
- Surprisingly, more than any other zodiac sign, Scorpios had the strongest preference of the "car-a-mel" pronunciation (71%)
- And 34% of Americans admit that the "nuttiest" thing they do with their cereal is drink it out of the bowl.
