NEW YORK, May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, May 9, 2019, Junior Achievement of New York (JA) presented the 2019 Champions Award to Jack Kopnisky, President and CEO, Sterling National Bank, in recognition of the bank's commitment to exemplary corporate citizenship and community engagement across Greater New York. Sterling National Bank has become a leading partner with JA New York in Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island, thanks to its support of JA's financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career awareness education programs in K-12 schools.
Over 150 business leaders and educators gathered to celebrate the evening's honoree and raise funds to support the delivery of JA programs reaching 90,000 students in the Greater New York area. The event raised $117,000 to support JA's programs across Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam Counties.
JA New York also welcomed the evening's guest speaker, George Latimer, Westchester County Executive. County Executive Latimer spoke about the influence of his financial education experiences at Mt. Vernon High School, which prepared him for his career in business. He shared his commitment to programs like Junior Achievement, which ensure that young people are exposed to personal finance and entrepreneurship concepts they may not otherwise learn in school.
Emily Salinas, a senior at Lincoln High School, Yonkers, was recognized for her participation in JA programs and her achievement as a 2018-2019 Student Ambassador. Emily stated, "I know that personal finance is not only about earning and spending money, but it's about managing and planning in order to build a secure financial future...Thanks to Junior Achievement, I am one step ahead and ready for the future!"
