NEW YORK, April 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of Earth Month, John Hardy, the sustainable luxury jewelry brand will donate 20% of all Bamboo Collection sales made on JohnHardy.com to support Trees New York (Treesny.org.)
As part of John Hardy's mission to be Greener Every Day, the brand initiated its Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo initiative in 2007 wherein a portion of proceeds from the Bamboo Collection are used to plant bamboo seedlings in Bali. The goal is to offset the carbon emissions associated with the company's print advertising, travel and electricity usage in order to help John Hardy reach their goal of becoming a carbon neutral company. To date, the brand has planted over 900,000 bamboo seedlings throughout Bali – where John Hardy jewelry is made in the brand's open air compound that is equal parts studio, workshop and organic farm.
This April, Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo will go one step further to benefit Trees New York (Treesny.org) while aiding the organization's goal to plant 100 evergreen trees in New York City by 2015.
Trees New York focuses its tree planting efforts in neighborhoods near highways and commercial trucking zones. These neighborhoods contend with major environmental problems, including disproportionately high child asthma rates.
A healthy tree canopy cover filters the air, reducing particulate matter that aggravates the lungs. Over time, an increased tree canopy shades buildings, streets and sidewalks reducing surface temperatures and energy use.
An increased tree canopy will help mitigate New York City's regional urban heat island effect, combat air pollution, reduce energy overload, maintain ecosystem balance and improve public health.
Evergreen trees not only bring beautiful green hues and rich textures to New York City streets, they also clean the air all year round, capturing airborne pollutants even during the winter, when particulate levels are often at their highest.
On April 22nd, John Hardy brand executives and New York based employees will help refurbish the Pleasant Village Community Garden in East Harlem.
