CHICAGO, Feb. 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block is pleased to announce that Partner Craig C. Martin has been named Chair of Jenner & Block's Litigation Department.
With more than 400 litigators across four US offices and one international office, the Jenner & Block Litigation Department has a long history as the nation's preeminent litigation practice, has been described as a powerhouse and is recognized for helping clients around the world with their most sensitive and important litigation and investigation matters. As a leader in complex commercial litigation, arbitration and investigations, the Litigation Department provides extensive subject matter experience in more than 30 disciplines critical to serving clients – from antitrust to white-collar defense.
Mr. Martin is a nationally recognized litigator who has spent his 27-year career at Jenner & Block. Along the way, he has been called upon by corporate America and some of the nation's influential families to protect their interests from the courtroom to the boardroom. He has tried – and won – dozens of cases in state and federal courtrooms and federal appellate courts. For many well-known and prominent corporations, he has overseen sensitive internal investigations and advised boards of directors on fiduciary and litigation matters.
"Under his leadership, Jenner & Block's Litigation Department will continue to rank among the very finest anywhere," said firm Chairman Anton R. Valukas, noting the firm's distinguished record since its founding in 1914 including name Partner Albert E. Jenner Jr.'s appointment as counsel for the Warren Commission and the House Judiciary Committee's inquiry into the impeachment of President Richard Nixon; the firm's representation of MCI in its historic antitrust suit against AT&T; notable US Supreme Court victories; Mr. Valukas' appointment as examiner in the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy; and the firm's nationally recognized trial practice.
"Craig is the right person to lead the Litigation Department. He understands how to build excellence in litigation just as other well-known Jenner & Block lawyers like the legendary Jerry Solovy did before him," said Partner Thomas P. Sullivan, who has worked with the firm continuously since 1954 except for his time as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
"It is an honor and a privilege to serve the firm and chair the Litigation Department," Mr. Martin said. "Our primary focus has been and will continue to be serving the needs of our clients, helping them protect and defend their interests in an increasingly litigious and complex environment. As our clients know, we try cases. Our ability to represent clients in matters that threaten their enterprises—no matter how complex the issues—is second to none. As we move forward, our strategy is to continue to deliver excellence, refine and grow both our reach and reputation as a go-to law firm for high-end, high-stakes litigation and as boardroom counsel on litigation, governance and investigations. This is the driver that has made Jenner & Block successful over its first 100 years and is the foundation of our efforts to support our clients when they have moments important to their business and lives."
According to Mr. Martin, as co-chairs of the Litigation Department for the past eight years, he and David Bradford built the structure of their much-recognized Litigation Department over their eight years together as co-chairs. "David's strategy and guidance have helped grow and shape an exceptional group of more than 400 litigators. His contributions have been exceptional and his leadership will be greatly missed," Mr. Martin said. Mr. Bradford will focus on his own practice and remains a member of the Policy Committee, the firm's governing body.
Mr. Martin has been a Litigation Department co-chair since 2008, a member of the firm's Policy Committee since 2006 and has held many other leadership positions at the firm. He has a reputation for high-stakes, "bet-the-company" litigation and has been lead trial counsel for decades in matters involving civil rights, ERISA, employment, breach of fiduciary duty, intellectual property, whistle-blower, tort and criminal breach of contract. In recent years, he has represented Aon, Dow Chemical Company, the Crown family, General Dynamics, Northern Trust, Olin Corporation and Wolters Kluwer, among many other clients of the firm.
Mr. Martin has also made substantial contributions through pro bono, service to the bar and as a recognized civic leader in Chicago. Chicago Magazine named him to its 2015 list of the city's 100 most powerful people, and Crain's Chicago Business chose him for inclusion in its 2015 "Who's Who in Chicago" annual list of influential members of the city's business community. He served on the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago for nearly 20 years, including as its chairman from 2011 to 2014. He is a member of the executive committee of the board of the Lyric Opera and a board member of Crown Family Philanthropies. He is also a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Chicago Club and the Economic Club of Chicago. Mr. Martin's service to the bar included co-chairing the 2012 annual meeting of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation.
