It's Time for TMI: When It Comes To Yeast Infections, More Than Half Of Young Women Don't Know How To Deal
MONISTAT® and Dr. Lisa Masterson Team Up to Educate Young Women about Yeast Infections
TARRYTOWN, N.Y., June 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- With all the contradictory information out there, finding the right answers to intimate health issues can be confusing and overwhelming for young women. A new survey from MONISTAT®, makers of the #1 doctor-recommended over-the-counter vaginal yeast infection treatment, found that when it comes to dealing with yeast infections, the majority of young women are relying on advice that's plain wrong – and even harmful.
Yeast infections are so common that as many as three out of four women will experience one in their lifetime. Even so, more than half of the young women surveyed (53 percent) have no idea what to do about them.
MONISTAT® is launching "It's Time for TMI," teaming up with Dr. Lisa Masterson, a well-known OB/GYN and expert in women's health, to give young women the facts about yeast infections. Young women can visit ItsTimeforTMI.com to educate themselves about yeast infections and learn how to cure them. The site offers infographics and videos that bring to life the facts about yeast infections, with expert advice they can share with each other. It also features an interactive, five-question quiz that young women can take to test their own knowledge, and in return, receive a free sample of Chafing Relief Powder Gel® from MONISTAT™ Complete Care™.
"There's a lot of conflicting information out there about yeast infections and their treatment, so it's no surprise that young women are confused," said Dr. Lisa. "It's time to set the record straight. When it comes to your body and your health, you can never have too much information."
There are many misconceptions about what causes a yeast infection, even among young women who have experienced them first-hand. According to the survey:
- 81 percent believe having sex is a primary cause
- 67 percent think it can never be cured
- 59 percent believe it is highly contagious
- 52 percent blame laptop heat
- 30 percent think using a condom will reduce their risk.
To be clear, none of these are risk factors for yeast infections. Of those who have experienced yeast infections, two in five (42 percent) reported feeling self-conscious, more than half (55 percent) said they were afraid of being negatively judged by others, and that it made them feel dirty.
"A yeast infection is no big deal because it is as easily treatable as it is common," said Dr. Lisa. "MONISTAT® can begin to relieve symptoms soon after the first dose, with a full cure after seven days. It's prescription strength without the prescription and starts curing on contact."
