Introducing Ocean's Halo™ Seaweed Chips, The First Totally Delicious Crispy, Crunchy Chip Made From Natural, Sustainably Harvested and Nutrient-Rich Seaweed
BALTIMORE, Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NATURAL PRODUCTS EXPO EAST -- A new wave in snacking debuted today at Natural Products Expo East (Expo East) with the introduction of Ocean's Halo™ Seaweed Chips, the first totally delicious crispy, crunchy chip made from sustainably harvested and nutrient-rich seaweed. Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips, the first product from New Frontier Foods Inc., is currently exhibiting at booth #8522 at Expo East, the largest natural, organic, and healthy products trade show on the East Coast.
Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips were created by four dads—two who grew up snacking on chips and two who were raised on seaweed—on a mission to create a chip nutritious enough for the produce aisle, but delicious enough for the snack aisle. Made from only sustainably grown seaweed and other natural, real ingredients, Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips are baked, taste great, and are packed with vitamins and minerals, with none of the bad stuff like GMOs, trans fats, MSG, or artificial anything. Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips are available in four gluten-free flavors: Chili Lime, Sea Salt, Korean BBQ and Hot & Spicy.
"As a native Texan, I have been known to eat more tortilla chips than are good for me, and over the years did my fair share to contribute to the $2.3 billion tortilla chip market," explained Robert Mock, one of four dads who created Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips. "Once I became a father and started helping my kids make healthy snacking choices, I realized there was nothing out there that satisfied our cravings for a crispy, crunchy chip while delivering great nutrition. That's when I joined forces with three other dads to make a chip that's as delicious as it is nutritious."
Instead of relying on mysterious processed ingredients, "The Four Dads of Ocean's Halo" (a.k.a. Mike Shim, Robert Mock, Michael Buckley and Shin Rhee) turned to a superfood that two of the dads had grown up eating as kids: seaweed.
One of the most nutrient-dense plants on the planet, seaweed has been a staple of the healthy Asian diet for hundreds of years. In addition to being a great source of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, seaweed is rich in iodine, selenium, and iron and can contain up to 10 times more calcium than milk. Seaweed has also been linked to a variety of health benefits, including preventing osteoporosis, improving insulin resistance, and helping control cholesterol and managing weight.
One serving of Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips provides 40% of the daily value of Vitamin A. It also has 45% fewer calories (85 per 1 oz. serving), 75% less fat (2.5 g) and 14% less carbohydrates (13 g) than potato chips. Ocean's Halo is high in protein (5 g), fiber (2 g), vitamins, and minerals.
Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips are a whole lot better for the planet than other snack chips out there—most of which are made from resource-intensive and environmentally destructive land crops, like potatoes and corn—because seaweed is farmed on the Earth's most sustainable farm "land": the ocean. No fresh water, no fertilizer, and no deforestation required, seaweed needs only nature to make it grow, making ocean farms more sustainable than even the most environmentally sensitive land farms.
"The more I learned about seaweed, the more I realized what an untapped food source it is," said Mike Shim, Ocean's Halo co-creator. "It's amazing when you realize that seaweed is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, taking as little as 15 days to go from seed to harvest. And consider this: a seaweed farm the size of Washington state can provide enough protein for the entire world population."
Committed to health and sustainability in every way, Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips are sold in 100% compostable bags produced from wood pulp that is sourced from managed tree farms. These bags are certified to meet ASTM D6400 "Specification for Compostable Plastics" standards for all key biodegradation situations, including industrial, home and waste-water categories. The bags are also recyclable through organic recycling (composting) facilities.
Ocean's Halo Seaweed Chips donates two percent of its profits to organizations that are fighting for the health of our oceans so that the next generation—and the next and the next—can enjoy the bounty and beauty they have to offer.
