"ING DIRECT values opportunities to touch lives and make valuable contributions in Los Angeles," said Bill Watt, Head of West Coast Sales for ING DIRECT USA. "During Orange Days of Giving, we are proud to support Beyond Shelter in their mission of improving and empowering the lives of children and families."
Located in south Los Angeles, Beyond Shelter's Broadway Village II provides 50 affordable housing units for formerly homeless and low-income families. Associates' Orange Days of Giving projects at Beyond Shelter will include:
- Exterior and interior painting (stairwells, hallways and murals);
- Landscaping and beautification (planting, pruning, and edging gardens);
- Cleaning and reorganizing storage closets;
- Renovating and repairing a children's play area and basketball court;
- Assembling and installing benches for tenants; and
- Converting two storage rooms into a computer room and family room.
Beyond Shelter is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 in response to the increasing number of homeless families in Los Angeles and the need for a more comprehensive method of serving them. Today, the mission of the agency is to develop systemic approaches to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children, and to enhance family economic security and well-being. Beyond Shelter accomplishes this mission through the following strategies: (1) responsive service delivery, (2) people-centered community development, and (3) the creation of knowledge for social change.
ING DIRECT USA's Orange Days of Giving was created and organized in 2007 entirely by Associate committees from various departments throughout the bank. Each year, the committees are tasked with locating unique venues and programs through which Associates can share their time and talent with the community.
