About Drowners
"I stand for the relentless and endless pursuit of fun and hope to end boredom by living a creative life designed by my own rules." -- Jack Ridley III (guitar, vocals)
"What I stand for? Living a life without any preconceived notion of modern society's expectations. In short, I do what I want, when I want." -- Eric Lee Snyder (bass)
"I stand for old ladies and pregnant women on the subway." -- Matthew Hitt (lead vocals, guitar)
In the late summer of 2011, Drowners frontman Matthew Hitt found himself in New York City. "I just like the way things look here. I like the way things are done here. I like how late everything happens," says the Welsh native. New York's signature up-all-night energy courses through Drowners' self-titled debut, but there's a sweet melancholy to the album as well. "The early songs came out really short – I thought, well, I've already sung the chorus twice I don't need to do it again, that's what makes it a chorus! I think that being in New York influenced what I was trying to do with economy in song structure and instrumentation. It's like, here's what I'm trying to say. Okay, I said it. Now it's over. Onto the next one."
Gallivanting around downtown, Hitt also met likeminded souls, including future bandmates Jack Ridley III (guitar, vocals) and Erik Lee Snyder (bass). While Hitt is responsible for the elegantly understated lyrics throughout the album – the kind that adhere to his Salinger-esque economy of words – he professes that everything changed as soon as recording began. When Hitt, Ridley and Snyder began to play, Hitt's initial blueprint and the band's extensive punk music background melded. "Our live shows are a lot more aggressive," Hitt emphasises, "With the album, we wanted to create like a sort of layered, fleshed out live show." The result is an album that toes the line between music that sweeps the listener up, and lyrics that beg for their deep sensitivity and understanding. "Whether you think something is good or not is if you respond to it," says Hitt. "I wanted to ellicit a response, but I want them to get whatever they want from it."
About Dr. Martens
Throughout Dr. Martens history, the brand has been adopted and subverted by countless rebellious characters, subcultures and tribes. These are the people who stand out from the crowd in their own unique way and for many, their journey of self-expression has always been accompanied by a pair of Doc's. Dr. Martens celebrates these free-thinking individuals – from first time wearers to those who have been with the brand forever. These are the authentic characters that stand for something.
Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, designed by German inventor, Dr. Klaus Maertens, was engineered primarily to meet the specific need of providing additional support and comfort for his broken foot. The Dr. Martens boot, that was then manufactured by R Griggs and Co, British boot makers, with its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole and heel-loop, was a boot for workers, initially worn by postmen and policemen; comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time.
A specific range of "Made In England" products are still manufactured in the Cobbs Lane factory, Wollaston, England which has been making footwear since 1901. It is the home of the original Dr. Martens boot and within this small factory works a close-knit team of people schooled in traditional shoe-making and the unique process that makes Dr. Martens like no other shoe on earth.
This is the factory where it all began; where the first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on April 1st, 1960. The manufacturing process has been fine-tuned and perfected ever since - from the cutting of the leather hides to the heat-sealing with a blade of fire that welds the air-cushioned sole to the upper.
