ICMA-RC Congratulates ICMA on Reaching Milestone 100-Year Anniversary
-- ICMA Continues Mission to Serve Local Governments --
WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- ICMA-RC commends its founder, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), on reaching its milestone 100th anniversary and its continued success in fostering excellence and professional management in local governance to build better communities.
In 1914, ICMA was founded by eight city managers, a time when there were only 31 U.S. cities with professional managers. Today, ICMA is the premier organization for professional local government managers. More than 150 million Americans — about half the U.S. population — live in communities ranging from small towns to large metropolitan areas with a professional manager in place.
In the years since its founding, ICMA has championed professional local government management, providing services, research, publications, data and information, peer and results-oriented assistance, and training and development to thousands of city, town and country leaders and other individuals and organizations.
ICMA's significant achievements include founding ICMA-RC in 1972 to create a portable retirement system for public sector employees. Starting with a single retirement plan and a single participant, ICMA-RC has grown to serve more than 1.2 million participant accounts and administers over 9,000 plans.
"Many public sector employees will have a more secure retirement because of ICMA's vision in back in 1972, and our founding was just one of the countless contributions to local government that ICMA has made over the past 100 years," said Joan McCallen, ICMA-RC president and CEO. "We applaud the organization's many accomplishments and extend our congratulations to them for 100 years of dedicated service."
ICMA-RC is pleased to join ICMA in celebrating its 100th anniversary at their annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina and is proud to continue its longstanding and successful service to local communities. For more information about ICMA's 100-year history, visit www.icma.org/anniversary.
