MATAWAN, N.J., Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- iCIMS, Inc., a leading provider of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) talent acquisition software solutions for growing businesses, announces a new research eBook, "Increase Employee Engagement & Retention," focused on how businesses can create an onboarding program focused on career development and mentoring. The research eBook is currently available for complimentary download on Hire Expectations Institute™.
"With consistent job growth throughout this year, the fight for employers to attract top talent is fierce," said iCIMS Chief Marketing Officer, Susan Vitale. "Our research indicates that job and skills training is ranked one of the top workplace perks by employees – yet half of employees feel that development programs at their current employer are subpar. Focusing on career development and mentoring during the new hire onboarding experience could be a great opportunity for an employer to stand out with talent."
iCIMS conducted a survey of more than 850 talent acquisition professionals and employees to examine the types of programs that keep employees engaged. A few highlights from the "Increase Employee Engagement & Retention" research eBook include:
- Professional Mentors are in Demand – More than half of employees say a mentor would be helpful in developing their career, yet only 17% of employees claim to have a mentor.
- Employer Tip: Companies should establish a mentor program that begins within the new hire onboarding portal, including Q&A's or video clips featuring current employees at the company who can offer words of wisdom to new hires.

- A Supportive Work Environment is Preferred – Approximately 50% of employees prefer to work in a family-like environment that emphasizes mentoring and career development. Most employers describe their company culture as supportive and nurturing.
- Employer Tip: Companies with a team-oriented work environment should leverage it in their employment brand to attract and hire top talent. Showcase a video tour of the office on career sites and highlight corporate programs that reward career development in job descriptions.
- The Perfect Mentor Could Be a Manager – Employees cite experience in their role and chosen industry as the most important factors when choosing a mentor. Additionally, 68% say they found a mentor at a current or former employer, and more than 40% of employees look at their manager as a coach or mentor already.
- Employer Tip: Encourage managers to discuss their own career path and industry knowledge as part of the onboarding process to begin to build a foundation for a mentoring relationship.
"We believe this research eBook provides valuable insights that are essential for today's growing businesses looking to attract and retain stand-out staff members," said Vitale. "Through the resources available on Hire Expectations Institute, iCIMS is helping bridge the gap between what employees are seeking most within their careers and the elements employers can provide to attract and retain the best and the brightest among them."
