CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Hydrow by CREW, the first live outdoor reality (LOR) rower, today launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo and reached over $300,000 in sales within 24 hours. Led by athletes including those training for the U.S. National Rowing team, Hydrow delivers a live on-river outdoor rowing experience at-home that engages two times more of the body's muscles than biking or running, resulting in over 400 calories burned in a 20-minute workout. Starting today and through the fall, customers can visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/hydrow-the-live-outdoor-reality-rower/#/ and pre-order the rower at 60% off for $999, including a one-year subscription, before it ships nationwide in spring 2019.
Unlike other at-home fitness equipment, Hydrow generates 86% muscle engagement - compared to 44% for biking & running - while bringing the outdoor rowing experience straight to the comfort of people's homes with live workouts broadcasted from the Charles River and the Intercoastal. Hydrow offers 100s of customizable workouts and difficulty levels across four categories (breathe, sweat, push and drive), and users can also choose the length of their workout from 5 minutes up to 60 minutes. In addition, members have the option to row as part of a team or individually, and leaderboards are showcased to keep users accountable and challenged.
"When people do something together in complete synchronicity, they develop empathy. This is something rowers often feel, and it's one of the reasons why I launched Hydrow; not only to deliver an accessible and amazing workout to people's homes, but to also bring the public a sense of community," said Bruce Smith, Founder & CEO of Hydrow. "Global Market Insights estimates that the global fitness equipment market will hit $14 billion by 2024, and rowing is also growing in popularity. There's no other total body workout that compares to it, and we believe there's a huge opportunity for something like this in the market. We're looking forward to bringing a fun and immersive workout into consumer's homes."
Workouts on the Hydrow are showcased on a 22" HD, water resistant touchscreen monitor complete with HiFi speakers, an embedded camera, and a microphone. Ergonomically designed for ultimate comfort, Hydrow offers a "back friendly" resistance, which provides a low resistance at the beginning of the stroke when the back is folded and most compressed, and increases the resistance as the stroke unfolds. The machine is also quiet, so members can clearly hear music and instructors without the interference of chain and fan noises typical with other machines.
Since launching in 2017, Hydrow has raised $5 million in seed capital, with funding from Olympian and indoor rowing world record holder Richard M. Cashin and private equity executive P. Andrews McLane. Upon shipping in spring 2019, Hydrow will retail for $2,199 and require a monthly membership of $38 per month.
