Hospitals And Medical Professionals Look To SUBWAY® Restaurants To Provide Healthier Options
-Chain Adds More Locations and Brings Healthier Options to Millions-
MILFORD, Conn., March 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The SUBWAY® restaurant chain opened 2,714 new locations worldwide in 2013, providing about 27,000 new jobs through the brand's franchisees and continuing to bring healthier options to consumers. Included in the new locations were 39 hospital sites, bringing the total hospitals and health care facilities the brand is located in to 250 worldwide.
"In addition to offering lots of options to our customers, hospitals and industry locations want us to be part of the food offerings because our business model fits easily into small or large spaces, which has resulted in more openings in hospitals, school lunch programs, churches and even museums," said Don Fertman, Chief Development Officer for the Subway chain. "We were just rated the number one global franchise opportunity for the fourth year in a row by Franchise Direct, a leading online resource for global franchise opportunities."
Hospitals find SUBWAY® restaurants to be a great fit since they provide healthier options to staff, residents and visitors. The SUBWAY® menu includes sandwiches and salads that are trans-fat free and low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Each six-inch sandwich, when made to recipe, has two servings of fresh vegetables.
The expansion of the SUBWAY® chain provides convenience for consumers looking for healthier options while grabbing a meal on-the-go. This growth has also captured the attention of several organizations whose mission it is to promote healthy eating and lifestyles, including the Partnership for A Healthier America, and the American Heart Association. Additionally, the brand was recently recognized as a 2013 Champion by the Produce for Better Health Foundation for its efforts to increase fruit and vegetable consumption to help improve the health of America.
Among the 39 hospital locations where Subway restaurants opened in hospitals 2013 include: Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland; Kenzen Medical Center in Quito, ECU; and Kokelaben Dhirabhai Ambani in Mumbai, India. These openings helped the brand surpass the 9,000 non-traditional restaurant mark. Non-traditional locations are those that may not fit in a traditional sized setting or are located in a unique or unusual location.
That trend of opening in hospital locations has continued in 2014, with the recent opening of a SUBWAY® restaurant in the Denver Health Medical Center at 777 Bannock Street in Denver, Colorado.
