Honeywell Hosts Sixth Annual Green Boot Camp Sustainability Workshop In San Diego
Award-Winning Program Gives 70 Middle School Teachers from 12 Countries the Knowledge and Tools to Teach Energy and Environmental Concepts
SAN DIEGO and MINNEAPOLIS, June 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Seventy middle school teachers from 12 countries are in San Diego this week for Honeywell Green Boot Camp, an annual workshop that turns educators into students, giving them the information, experience and resources to bring lessons on sustainability and the environment back to their classrooms. The event is part of Honeywell's (NYSE: HON) commitment to supporting science and math education.
"Teachers lay the groundwork for and provide inspiration to the next wave of scientists, engineers and innovators," said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. "Green Boot Camp gives educators from across the globe the ideas and tools to help today's students contribute to a more sustainable and energy-conscious future."
The workshop curriculum includes tutorials on a range of topics — from solar cars to water conservation. And each subject is paired with expert-led activities to demonstrate these concepts in action. Following the hands-on exercises, teachers convene to discuss how to apply the ideas in their classrooms and within their respective subject areas.
Now in its sixth year, Green Boot Camp is made possible by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative.
"As a science educator, I'm always looking for development opportunities to advance my knowledge around key science topics," said Kristy Mar, secondary science teacher at J.H. Hull Middle School in Torrance, Calif. "It's my professional obligation to continuously grow, and Honeywell's Green Boot Camp provides an ideal forum to learn and collaborate with my peers. I can't wait to bring these lessons back to my students."
In addition to teachers from the United States, educators from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Romania, Turkey and the United Kingdom are part of this year's Green Boot Camp class. More than 450 teachers applied for the workshop, and those selected to attend received a scholarship from Honeywell that covers travel and accommodations.
"Green Boot Camp adds to my recent experience at Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy, another STEM program that brings middle school teachers to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Alabama. Both programs give me the tools I need to deliver an engaging STEM curriculum to my classroom — a key area of focus for education in my country," said Luciandro Pereira Sodre, a science teacher from Brazil. "These programs are not only informative, but fascinating and fun, and help me inspire my students."
Attendees will receive information and insight from energy experts representing organizations such as San Diego Gas & Electric, Chicago Botanic Garden, the Solar Rain Bottled Water Company, the California Center for Sustainable Energy and Honeywell.
Green Boot Camp participants will also complete a community service project in nearby National City, Calif. The project will focus on improvements to facilities used by A Reason to Survive (ARTS), an organization that provides creative arts programs for youth facing adversity. The teachers will build two rain barrel systems for the ARTS Center, and will also install outside sinks, build benches and complete landscaping work.
