Heavy Reading Analyzes Network as a Business Platform
Research Identifies Benefits of Network Instrumentation in Answering Executive Queries
SUNNYVALE, Calif. and CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Heavy Reading and Cariden Technologies, Inc. released a new research paper today entitled The Network as a Business Platform. This paper investigates how to extract and process business information from the network, a topic that is becoming critical in the hypercompetitive telecommunications industry.
Written by Heavy Reading Analyst Sarah Wallace, the paper addresses questions on cost, profitability, budget requirements, and policies—particularly peering policies—and how they can be answered with data already available in the network. Although networks contain the answers to these critical business questions, methods to turn the data into actionable information have been lacking until recently. Wallace also discusses how Cariden's approach, built on their Infrastructure SDN platform NS-OS, can help operators get the answers they need.
"The sophisticated instrumentation to extract business data and turn it into meaningful information is actually quite new, and certainly wasn't available 5-10 years ago," explained Ms. Wallace. "The technology requires a cross-sectional slicing of many views into the network: traffic, topologies, and equipment specifics need to be evaluated in concert, rather than in isolation. This requires combining the analysis of flow measurements, interface counters, and topology changes over time."
Arman Maghbouleh, President of Cariden Technologies, noted that the MATE portfolio mines this information from the network for ready access. "Business stakeholders interest in IP networks has increased tremendously over the last decade," explained Dr. Maghbouleh. "Our customers demand a business view of the network—network BI will transform the networking business much as data has transformed other business segments."
Cariden's reporting capabilities from their MATE Design and MATE Live products have long been able to address selected questions, such as a link utilization on a per customer or per service basis. Cariden also provides a generalized business intelligence framework, along with a service for analyzing "traffic distance" to minimize backbone costs and select optimal border locations for peering.
