Harry F. Kuhn II is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of clinical social work
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., May 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Continental Who's Who -- Harry F. Kuhn III, the 802nd clinical social worker to be licensed by the State of New Jersey in its inaugural licensure year of 1991, a currently practicing State certified bilingual school social worker since 1973, and an American Board-certified diplomate in clinical social work, is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of clinical social work.
Mr. Kuhn's career in social work began in 1969 as a social worker for the federally-funded Cuban Refugee Program under the auspices of the Essex County Welfare Board in Newark, NJ. In 1973, he became a school social worker for the public school district of Rahway, NJ, and for the next 30 years dedicated himself to the special educational and mental health needs of preschool through high school students. Mr. Kuhn continues to maintain a private consulting practice in school social work and forensic social work, an active professional career spanning six decades.
Mr. Kuhn's responsibilities as a bilingual social worker in the Cuban refugee program were to arrange for their public assistance as political refugees and to help them cope with the trauma of uprooting themselves from living under a communist regime to living in a democratic society. The cost of freedom for these political refugees was the loss of any further contact with their husbands, fathers and sons, many of whom were consequently incarcerated or summarily executed.
In his capacity as a school social worker, Mr. Kuhn was assigned to the child study team to meet the needs of students with educational disabilities. He was the second school social worker employed by the Rahway public school system, and the first to hold graduate degrees in clinical social work and in general psychology with an undergraduate degree in the Spanish language. Mr. Kuhn specialized in meeting the special educational needs of students with moderate to severe emotional disturbance, learning disabilities, multiply disabilities, autism, and profound developmental delays.
Mr. Kuhn consulted with both regular and special education teachers regarding students with emotional, behavioral and learning disorders. He consulted with parents to enhance their parenting effectiveness to improve their child's academic achievement, school attendance, and classroom conduct while simultaneously advocating for needed changes in school policies and instructional practices to accommodate the academic and psychosocial needs of underachieving students.
Throughout his 30-year career in the Rahway Public Schools, Mr. Kuhn established a remarkable rapport with community-based charitable organizations and non-profit social services agencies to assist families that did not have health coverage, adequate clothing, or sufficient financial resources to feed and shelter themselves. Following the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack on New York City's World Trade Center, Mr. Kuhn provided his professional services pro-bono at the FEMA-organized Family Assistance Center across the Hudson River at Liberty State Park in Jersey City for the WTC victims and witnesses.
A graduate of Montclair State (College) University and of Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Mr. Kuhn currently is a doctoral student at the International University of Graduate Studies, St. Kitts & Nevis. Mr. Kuhn has published several social work articles under peer review as well as presented several unpublished manuscripts throughout his social work career. Mr. Kuhn has been a member of the National Association of Social Workers since 1978, a member of NASW's Academy of Certified Social Workers since 1980 and an NASW diplomate in clinical social work since 1988. He is also a member of the American Association of School Social Workers. Mr. Kuhn holds the distinguished title of board-certified diplomate emeritus in clinical social work conferred by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work in 2007. He was selected as Social Worker of the Year in 2010-11.
