OTTAWA, May 17, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today announced the names of the two young Canadians who will be the next Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors.
The ambassadors for the second year of the ten-year gift in honour of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's 2011 Royal Tour are:
This program offers two young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 a unique opportunity to be youth ambassadors with Parks Canada. They will explore some of Canada's most unique and interesting places first-hand - biking, kayaking, hiking and reliving history - and share these experiences with youth in their communities and at Parks Canada locations.
"Congratulations to Julia and Colin on becoming Canada's next two Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors," said Minister Kent. "Through this legacy program, our Parks Canada youth ambassadors inspire young Canadians to be active, get outdoors and learn more about Canada's natural beauty and rich history."
Ms. Belliveau and Mr. Sutherland were selected from the candidates who applied for the position through a recruitment process for the two Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassadors in collaboration with Global Vision, a non-profit organization with an established record of engaging and supporting the leadership development of Canadian youth.
"We are proud of our country's natural beauty and rich history and look forward to sharing our experiences this summer with other young Canadians," said Julia Belliveau. "We want to find innovative ways to engage youth unfamiliar with Parks Canada so they see themselves as a part of the natural and cultural heritage that extends across our country," added Colin Sutherland.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the creation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador program as the Government of Canada gift to Their Royal Highnesses to commemorate the 2011 Royal Tour of Canada.
The youth ambassador program is one of a number of initiatives by which Parks Canada is working to connect youth to Canada's natural and cultural heritage.
