Growing With Speed, Reducing Power Need
nTelos selects Tellabs for smart optical transport and IPTV/triple-play services
NAPERVILLE, Ill., July 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- What if your fiber footprint doubled overnight? Bigger service area, great. More capacity, terrific. But how do you control expenses and power consumption for the expanded network while rolling out new, in-demand services?
For nTelos, this question isn't hypothetical. That's why the integrated communications provider turned to Tellabs for optical transport and high-speed data solutions that meet long-term growth needs.
On the heels of acquiring approximately 2,200 route miles of fiber from Allegheny Energy, nTelos reviewed network build-out requirements and updated its options for network elements. The goal was to choose the technology solutions that best serve nTelos' customer requirements in the expanded service areas.
High-bandwidth backbone
nTelos selected the Tellabs® 7100 Optical Transport System (OTS) for the expanded fiber optic network to power SONET, Ethernet and 2.5G and 10G data services, with an eye toward 40G and 100G. The Tellabs 7100 OTS enables nTelos to increase the amount and types of traffic it can carry on the backbone with fewer network elements and reduced power consumption.
"The Tellabs 7100 OTS provides us the flexibility and reliability to serve our business customers with mission-critical services like data center connectivity and leased capacity for mobile backhaul," said Glenn Butler, Director Engineering & Planning for nTelos. "Long term, the easy-to-use network management system, lower power needs and interoperability between Tellabs products will produce significant cost savings for nTelos."
More triple play for consumers and business
nTelos has an established base of Tellabs® 1150 Multiservice Access Platforms. The service provider will continue to deploy the Tellabs 1150 platform as it expands IPTV and triple-play offerings for residential and business customers. Additionally, nTelos selected the Tellabs® 1600-729 Optical Network Terminal to offer triple-play services in multi-dwelling units such as apartment complexes, senior living centers and office buildings.
"nTelos has a smart, strategic growth plan that is empowered by Tellabs solutions," said Chuck Bernstein, vice president, North American sales, at Tellabs. "As nTelos expands its reach, it can confidently offer competitive high-bandwidth services with reduced overall network costs."
