The interactive tours are led by volunteer nutrition and culinary experts who teach participants to compare unit prices, purchase fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare food labels, and pick out whole grains. Shoppers can win a $10 gift card for participating, and will also have the opportunity to visit healthy eating stations around the store.
WHO: Walmart shoppers, local families, city and state officials, nutrition and culinary educators. Hosted by Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters, part of the No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 26; tours depart at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.; healthy eating stations open at 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: Walmart, 2701 Port Covington Drive, Baltimore, Md., 21230
WHY: A recent survey released by Share Our Strength found that 85% of low-income families want to make healthy meals, but only about half are able to do so on a regular basis. Families cited the cost of healthy groceries as their primary obstacle. But with strategic shopping, anyone — even on a food stamp budget — can stretch their food dollar in a healthy way. Shopping Matters, an initiative of Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters, helps low-income families get the most bang for their buck at the grocery store. The Walmart Foundation, a national sponsor of Cooking Matters along with the ConAgra Foods Foundation, generously supports Shopping Matters.
