Gov. James B. Hunt Named National Education Policy Leader of the Year

ARLINGTON, Va., July 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Gov. James B. Hunt, former governor of North Carolina and chairman of the James B. Hunt, Jr., Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy, has been named the Policy Leader of the Year by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). The honor is annually given to a national or state policymaker in recognition of their contributions to education.

From 1977-85 and 1993-2001, Hunt served a record four terms as North Carolina's governor. In that time, studies showed that student test scores improved there more than in any other state during the 1990s. He has particularly focused on early childhood development and improving the quality of teaching in America. His Smart Start program is a nonprofit, public-private partnership rooted in each of the state's counties providing quality child care, health care, and family support for each child. He chaired the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for 10 years, developing standards for what accomplished teachers in America need to know and be able to do, and he founded and chaired the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future.

Previous winners of NASBE's Policy Leader of the Year Award include Gen. Colin Powell, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, South Carolina Gov. and Education Secretary Richard Riley, New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean, former First Lady Barbara Bush, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, and Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson.
