Google Expeditions to Offer Virtual Career Field Trips at Destination Imagination's Global Finals 2016
International creative and STEAM organization helps debut Google's virtual reality at the largest worldwide celebration of innovation and creativity
CHERRY HILL, N.J., May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Google Expeditions has worked with Destination Imagination (DI), a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching students the creative process through hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), as well as social entrepreneurship challenges, to feature its newly launched Google Expeditions Pioneer Program at the Global Finals 2016 Innovation Expo.
Google Expeditions Pioneer Program was created out of a desire for students to experience a "day in the life" of people in industries and careers that interested them. Each virtual field trip immerses the students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life and give students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.
"Part of preparing students for the future is addressing their interests and curiosities now. The mission of Global Finals is to provide opportunities to explore the industries and career paths that pique students' interest," said Dr. Chuck Cadle, CEO of Destination Imagination. "Our collaboration with Google Expeditions as a Global Finals 2016 exhibitor provides an unparalleled opportunity for supplemental learning through a virtual tour into their desired career path."
Through the Expeditions Pioneer Program, Google brings teachers a box with their travel necessities – a tablet for the teacher, Cardboard viewers and a phone for the students. In addition to the research and development from Google, The Wildlife Conservation Society, PBS, the American Museum of Natural History, the Planetary Society and the Palace of Versailles have contributed to developing the curriculum for the students. Each trip is a collection of virtual reality panoramas including 360-degree photo spheres, 3-D images and video, and ambient sound with annotated details. Once a teacher selects the destination, the virtual adventure begins.
Google will preview its Expeditions Pioneer Program to the Destination Imagination student teams and other Global Finals 2016 attendees at the Innovation Expo, taking place May 25-27.
Through the Google's exhibitor participation and the Innovation Expo's other outstanding organizations, the more than 9,000 students participating in this year's Innovation Expo will uncover opportunities to become the builders of tomorrow. Global Finals is the world's largest celebration of student creativity, with more than 1,400 of the top-tiered Destination Imagination teams showcasing their innovative solutions over the four-day event with opportunities for students to discover, explore and imagine.
