BURLINGTON, Mass., April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Decision Resources Group finds that the global powered surgical instrument market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 3 percent through 2022 in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan. Growth will be largely in line with expanding elderly and obese populations prone to conditions treated in conjunction with powered surgical instruments, such as orthopedic, ear, nose and throat and neurological maladies.
Other key findings from the Medtech 360 report entitled Global Markets for Powered Surgical Instruments 2014:
- High-speed powered surgical instruments: Sales of high-speed powered surgical instruments will outpace both large- and small-bone products through 2022. These products are required in most nonelective surgeries, such as neurosurgery, while large-bone and small-bone products are often used in elective procedures. Because the global economy remains stagnant, particularly in Europe, patients are continuing to put off elective procedures, limiting demand for large- and small-bone products.
- Electric versus battery-powered equipment: In the U.S., there is a negligible market for electric capital equipment systems, while both Europe and Japan have a significant market for these products. This is because U.S. physicians have been very open to adopting battery-powered instruments for their handling characteristics, while European and Japanese physicians remain skeptical of the consistency of battery power.
- Pneumatic equipment: In all geographies, facilities will move away from the purchase of pneumatic devices, which are generally seen as outdated. As a result, the market for pneumatic capital equipment will decline while the markets for electric and battery-powered products will grow.
Comments from Decision Resources Group Analyst Hamza Sajjad:
- "Pricing pressures will continue to be a reality in the global powered surgical instrument market. The increasing presence of low-cost manufacturers will negatively affect prices of consumables, while the growing use of group purchasing organizations by hospitals will impact the pricing of capital equipment."
- "Companies often leverage their positions in other related device markets in order to sell their powered surgical instruments. For example, Stryker and DePuy Synthes both bundle sales of their instruments with various orthopedic devices. Similarly, Zimmer is poised to gain share using this tactic following the 2012 launch of its Universal Power System."
