Global mobile commerce sales will grow 68% in 2015
The 500 biggest mobile commerce retailers in the 2016 Mobile 500, Internet Retailer's latest research offering, will reach m-commerce sales of $155 billion in 2015, with emerging e-commerce markets in China, Eastern Europe, and Latin America posting the largest annual growth rates.
CHICAGO, Aug. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Driven by innovations in technology and shifting consumer behaviors, mobile commerce continues to skyrocket worldwide. Mobile sales by the 500 leading mobile commerce sites are on pace to reach $155 billion in 2015, up 68% from $92.4 billion in 2014, according to the just-released Internet Retailer 2016 Mobile 500, which ranks, profiles and details the world's 500 largest mobile commerce competitors by annual mobile sales and other key metrics. The 378 U.S. retailers in the 2016 Mobile 500 will reach m-commerce sales of $88 billion in 2015, up 36% from $65 billion in 2014. Mobile sales will account for 30% of total 2015 e-retail sales of the U.S. merchants in the Mobile 500. By contrast, e-retail sales in the U.S. grew 14.1% in Q2 2015, according to the Commerce Department.

However, data in the 2016 Mobile 500 show that the rest of the world is well on its way to besting the U.S. in mobile sales growth. Mobile commerce sales in Europe will grow 71% year-over-year and in Latin America, 60% in 2015. The most impressive figures, though, hail from the 14 Mobile 500 e-retailers based in China: they are collectively on their way to growing mobile sales an estimated 249% to $39.42 billion in 2015, up from $11.3 billion in 2014. Additionally, these Chinese e-retailers account for five of the Top 10 and nine out of the 10 Fastest-Growing Mobile 500 companies worldwide based on annual mobile sales.
This quantum leap in global mobile sales growth prompts many retailers to prioritize their tech spending and match consumers' online shopping behavior, which leans toward mobile shopping on apps. A breakdown of app visibility scores showing where e-retailers' apps appear in iOS AppStore and Google Play search results is just one of the many new metrics the 2015 Mobile 500 provides. The research publication analyzes the world's 500 leading mobile commerce merchants by 71 data elements—including mobile traffic and conversion rate, site speed scores on 3G and 4G networks, key vendors used, and dozens of other metrics.
"If you think mobile commerce is a sideline business for e-retailers, think again," observes Internet Retailer publisher and chairman Jack Love. "It's fast becoming the standard method of e-retailing and smart e-retailers are perfecting the ways they connect with on-the-go consumers to drive lasting ROI."
