Gillette And Tyson Gay Inspire The Next Generation Of Young Men Through The Get Started Campaign
Gillette and Gay to donate $25,000 to Gay's alma mater, Lafayette High School
BOSTON, June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, three-time World Champion and 100m American Record Holder Tyson Gay will team up with Gillette to donate $25,000 to Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky – the same high school that gave Tyson his great start in his track career. As part of Gillette's global 'Get Started' campaign, this donation is aimed to help inspire young men and demonstrate that with a great start in life, they can achieve their dreams and goals.
Through the 'Get Started' campaign, Gillette has partnered with 25 global ambassadors from around the world to help them give back to their respective organizations and communities where they received their great start in athletics, and in life. In addition to Gay, Gillette is also working with athletes such as Ryan Lochte (USA, swimming), Roger Federer (Switzerland, tennis), Sir Chris Hoy (Great Britain, cycling), and Rudy Fernandez (Spain, basketball), among others.
"I am excited to be partnering with Gillette on this important program and to be part of this world-class group of athletes from around the globe," commented Gay. "Lafayette High School is a special place for me. I am proud to be able to give back to the place where it started for me in Lexington. I want to encourage the kids in their development through track & field to ensure they have the same chances that I had as a student and young man."
"During his time in high school, Tyson was a three-time state champion in the 100m and also set the state record in 2001 – a record which still stands – so many of the students here see him as an inspiration and recognize that through hard work, they can achieve great things," said Ken Northington, Tyson's former high school coach.
With this donation, Lafayette High School plans to upgrade a majority of their track & field equipment, including purchasing items such as new starting blocks for the track and new uniforms for the students. In addition, the school is looking into hosting a major track invitational meet in the next year.
"Gillette is intrinsically linked to great starts for more than 800 million men around the world every day," added John Holding, marketing director, Gillette. "It is heartwarming to see Tyson give back to the community that gave him a great start in his career and we're thrilled he has taken time out of his training and preparation to be a part of this special event."
