SAN DIEGO, Calif., Jan. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- GigTown, LLC today announced the commercial launch of its innovative new mobile application expected to revolutionize the music industry by simplifying the process of discovering and booking local musicians for parties, events and private functions. Now available for download in the Apple App Store (Android coming soon), the GigTown app allows users to easily browse and listen to songs by local artists, create lists of favorites, customize playlists and view video footage of performances. To book, users simply set their location, choose the date and time of the event, and submit a booking request to their selected local musician.
GigTown was co-founded by Steve Altman, former President and Vice Chairman of Qualcomm Incorporated, and his son, Andy Altman. Both are passionate fans of local music and saw a need for a simple, easy way to discover local artists and hire them to perform. "We're so excited to launch GigTown and begin our mission of propelling local music and the musicians behind it," said Andy Altman. "Despite the amazingly talented musicians that exist in every community, there are so few opportunities for these musicians to earn a living doing what they love. We are convinced that GigTown will change the music industry forever, greatly increasing both the number and quality of opportunities for musicians to thrive and contribute to their community."
Putting the power of booking in the hands of consumers, GigTown sets itself apart with its simplicity and clear pricing structure. Musicians set their own hourly rates, which include setup, takedown, basic sound equipment and tip, so users know exactly what they will pay. When the performance ends, the user pays and rates the musicians directly through the app. During the recently completed beta trial, musicians were booked to perform with as little as 90-minutes notice.
During the beta trial, GigTown musicians ranged from soloists to twelve-piece bands and varied widely in price, from $25 per hour to over $3,000 per hour. The number of musicians available on the app is growing on a daily basis. Musicians interested in joining the GigTown platform need only submit the necessary information by going to www.GigTown.com and following the simple sign up process.
Launching first in San Diego, the GigTown app has plans of expanding to other major markets through 2015. The next cities to be launched will be determined by an artist sign-up contest: at the end of each month, the city with the most musicians signed up will be the next city where GigTown launches. Updates on the contest will be posted to GigTown social media throughout the year.
