HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Rather than the proverbial 'walk the walk,' Geneia today announced its President, Heather Lavoie, will run the Runner's World Half Marathon on October 20th in Bethlehem, PA. She also will join her children, Sophia, age 11, and Nolan, age 7, at the Runner's World 5K on October 19th.
Geneia is a sponsor of the Runner's World Half & Festival on October 18th – 20th, 2013 in Bethlehem, PA, which includes a half-marathon, a 10K, a 5K and free kid's runs, and an inaugural series of events in Boston on June 6th – 8th, 2014 (rw.runnersworld.com/rwhalf/) at which Geneia will have a wellness booth to help people know their vital biometric numbers such as body mass index (BMI). Geneia also sponsors the Millennium Running Series in New Hampshire (www.millenniumrunning.com).
"A hallmark of the running events that Geneia sponsors is the inclusion of the whole family, especially our kids. At Geneia, we are a company that wholeheartedly embraces the idea that health care innovation and wellness begin with us. We are committed to the health and wellness of our clients as well as our community, our employees and ourselves," said Heather Lavoie, President of Geneia.
An avid triathlete, Ms. Lavoie will be wearing a Garmin forerunner and a Fitbit. "I track my pace and my heart rate, but increasingly I'm interested in monitoring health indicators like the quality of my sleep. At Geneia, we are intrigued with the potential of wearable devices to monitor health conditions like diabetes and heart failure, and are actively creating a near-term reality in which these kind of devices are used to improve health and health care costs," said Ms. Lavoie.
Ms. Lavoie is not alone in her interest in the crossover of wearable fitness devices to health condition monitoring. Thirty million wearables were shipped in 2012, a 37% increase over 2011. Revenues are expected to grow to more than $6 billion in 2018 as interest in fitness activity trackers like Fitbit and home and remote patient monitoring continues to escalate.
