Futurist, Inventor and Visionary Hacker, Pablos Holman, to Keynote Penton's IoT Emerge Event
IoT Security Track Unveiled for November Conference in Chicago as @IoTiPenton Hosts a Twitter Chat on the Subject of IoT Security Thursday August 11 at 12 p.m. PT / #IoTbizchat
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- This past week, we learned about a whole host of new security vulnerabilities related to the Internet of Things (IoT), including new exploits of cars, medical devices, ATMs, and many other systems. With networked devices managing everything from cities to power grids, to manufacturing operations, securing the IoT has never been more critical. Penton's IoT Emerge, a new event presented by the IoT Institute, will bring the industry together in Chicago November 2-4 to offer real-world insights with a focus on business outcomes for IoT, cross-functional peer-to-peer networking, and local tours of IoT-enabled facilities.
Hacking the Future Keynote
Futurist, inventor, and noted hacker, Pablos Holman has been tapped to keynote at IoT Emerge on "Hacking the Future," Wednesday November 2nd. Holman has a unique view on hacking. He believes learning can come from breaking technology as well as building it. He also thinks using a hacker's mindset could be the key to coming up with solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. Holman helped create the world's smallest PC; 3D printers at Makerbot; spaceships with Jeff Bezos; artificial intelligence agent systems; and the Hackerbot, a Wi-Fi seeking robot. Today, he is working on futuristic invention projects at the Intellectual Ventures Laboratory.
IoT Emerge's Robust IoT Security Track
The IoT Security track will feature workshops and talks from security experts with experience in the private and public sector. The security track will provide information on identifying new threats and classes of attacks, security vulnerabilities, and present the latest best practices around security. IoT Emerge will tackle how cybersecurity impacts the engineering of the IoT, data, and public infrastructure. Sessions will also consider the top IoT-related security weaknesses and provide detailed solutions for how to address them. This track is designed to help attendees develop a better awareness of the security risks and offers steps to protect data and systems.
IoT Security track speakers include:
- Curtis Levinson, United States Cyber Defense Advisor to NATO, who will discuss the intersection of IoT and SCADA systems as they relate to the security of the power grid.
- Creighton Magid, Partner-in-Charge at Washington Dorsey & Whitney LLP, who will discuss the legal ramifications of IoT security breaches.
- Mike Ahmadi, Global Director of Critical Systems Security at Synopsys Software Integrity Group, who will talk about tools and standards related to cyber threat intelligence.
- Dan Isaacs, Director Connected System and IIoT Ecosystem Strategy at Xilinx, Inc., who will present an overview of a testbed initiative designed to address IoT security starting early in the product development cycle.
- Rawlson King, Communications Director, Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA) who will discuss the current state of smart building cybersecurity.
IoT Security Twitter Chat
Thursday, August 11 at 12 p.m. PT the IoT Institute will host a Twitter Chat dedicated to IoT security to discuss security strategies, vulnerabilities and attacks related to IoT. Tune in @IoTiPenton with the hashtag #IoTbizchat to join the conversation.
The 10 Most Vulnerable IoT Security Targets
The IoT is exponentially increasing the number of potential targets for cyber-criminals. Imagine the havoc that hackers could cause a nation by systematically targeting its power grid, taking control over a city's network of video cameras, or taking control over a commercial airplane in flight. The IoT Institute has created a list of the top ten most vulnerable IoT security targets with an associated infographic and a corresponding survey:
- Industrial Facilities
- Cars
- Video Cameras
- IoT-Enabled Spying and Potential for Cyberwarfare
- Power Grids and Utilities
- Buildings
- City Infrastructure and Transportation Networks
- Medical Devices and Hospitals
- Airplanes
- Retail Stores and Databases

IoT Emerge, scheduled for November 2–4, 2016 at McCormick Place in Chicago, will offer real-world education and insights, hands-on experience of IoT enabled businesses through conference programs, live demos, case studies, and local tours. Mirroring the focus of the IoT Institute on Smart Cities and the Industrial IoT, the event will provide comprehensive insights and guidance on achieving success with IoT strategies and implementations in these segments. The event will feature strategic and technical sessions, workshops, hands-on training, cross-functional peer-to-peer networking, advice and lessons learned on achieving organizational readiness, leveraging data analytics, and instituting security best practices. Embracing the reality that IoT requires multiple stakeholders and departments working together, the event is targeted at private and public sector leaders; operations, IT, engineering, and facilities management; as well as system integrators and IoT developers.
The IoT Emerge Extreme Pass provides attendees access to the IoT Emerge, SmartGig Chicago and Empowering Customers & Cities conference programs. For more registration details and pass types click here. For maximum pass savings register on or before August 28, 2016.
