Baby Boomers have acquired more debt than any other age group in today's economy, raising the prospect that many will carry that debt into retirement. Cabral will share practical financial advice and her personal experiences about ways people can improve their family's financial future. This information will be communicated to AARP members through video content, webisodes, in-person appearances at AARP events, and live Web chats on both www.aarp.org and the newly launched www.aarp.org/espanol. She will also reach out to Latinos age 50+ and their families with in-culture and bilingual financial guidance.
"Financial planning and saving can often be overwhelming, yet in today's world it has become a necessity for families," said Anna Cabral. "I'm looking forward to connecting with AARP's members and sharing my personal experiences and financial tips on important steps towards building financial security. Further, I'm especially encouraged by AARP's commitment to the unique challenges faced by minorities and I'm hopeful that as someone who has experienced these myself, I can be helpful."
Cabral served as United States Treasurer from 2004-2009 where she spearheaded efforts that provided financial guidance to families and sought to increase financial literacy across the country, including home foreclosure prevention and identity theft prevention. She also helped create and launch a new Federal Commission on Financial Literacy, which brought together the private and public sector to advance financial education and understanding for people in all stages of their lives.
"Cabral's passion for helping families achieve financial success, from family budgeting at the kitchen table to saving for retirement or for educating their children and grandchildren, will be an invaluable resource for our members," said Emilio Pardo, EVP and Chief Brand Office, AARP. "We are excited to connect her expertise with our members, especially during these trying economic times."
