Former 9/11 Commission Chairman Tom Kean and Members of the Bipartisan Policy Center's National Security Preparedness Group to Make Recommendations on Preventing Violent Radicalization in America
WASHINGTON, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) will host a press conference with former 9/11 Commission Chairman Tom Kean, a co-chair of BPC's National Security Preparedness Group (NSPG), to release a new report on counter-radicalization this Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 10:00 AM in Washington, D.C.
Following remarks by Governor Kean, NSPG member Peter Bergen, Director of the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation, and BPC Visiting Scholar Peter Neumann, Founding Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King's College London, will discuss the new report titled, Preventing Violent Radicalization in America. Siobhan Gorman of The Wall Street Journal will moderate the discussion.
The report includes recommendations about ways to improve the government's counter-radicalization messaging, outreach and engagement, and training activities. The report also details a coherent strategy to counter violent radicalization that involves federal, state, and local government officials, as well as non-profit and private sector entities. Governor Kean, Congressman Hamilton, and members of the NSPG have been meeting with top intelligence and law enforcement officials to assess how the terrorist threat has changed in recent years.
NSPG is also co-chaired by former 9/11 Commission Vice Chair Lee Hamilton and is composed of a distinguished bipartisan group of experts, including former U.S. Secretary of Energy and U.S. Senator E. Spencer Abraham, Peter Bergen, Dr. Stephen Flynn, Dr. John Gannon, Dr. Bruce Hoffman, former Congressman Dave McCurdy, former Attorney General Edwin Meese III, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Ridge, former Assistant to the President for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Frances Townsend, former U.S. Attorney General Richard L. Thornburgh, former Congressman Jim Turner, and former Secretary of Agriculture and BPC Senior Fellow Dan Glickman. Rob Strayer, formerly on the staff of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, is the Executive Director.
