SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Chelsey Roebuck, a STEM educator whose work inspires students to discover their passion for science and technology, will be the featured speaker for WGU's Sage Talks lecture series on Wednesday, September 21, at 6 p.m. MDT. The lecture will take place at the Salt Lake City Library and will also be streamed online. The event is free and open to the public, who are requested to RSVP at www.wgu.edu/sagetalks_registration.
As the co-founder of community-based youth development organization, ELiTE Education, in New York City, Roebuck will share his journey from promising engineer to devoting his life to philanthropy and empowering low-opportunity students to realize their academic and career potential. Roebuck developed a passion for education and international development while completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. He founded ELiTE to increase students' access to STEM education throughout the world.
ELiTE's model empowers diverse communities and cultures, providing hands-on STEM and computer science programs in low-income communities throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and New York City. Roebuck also serves as co-founder and advisor for dotLearn, a digital education platform that works to increase access to online educational resources in emerging markets.
Following the lecture, the public is invited to a reception hosted by WGU President, Scott Pulsipher and Fran Peterman, National Director of the WGU Teachers College, at The Leonardo, a STEM-based interactive museum within walking distance from the Salt Lake City Library. Museum admission is included with registration.
WGU's lecture series, Sage Talks, is named after the university's mascot and has been created to provide personal and professional development, inspiration, and continuing education opportunities to the community. The series features leaders and innovators in fields represented by each of WGU's four colleges: business, education, healthcare, and information technology. Lecture topics are centered on leadership, new innovations and disruptions, and how education shapes the future.
