BOSTON and LUBBOCK, Texas, Nov. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Tech Chemistry students using Cengage Learning's MindTap digital learning solution received significantly better outcomes than those using comparable products, according to results from a study of nearly 1,800 chemistry students.
The study, conducted by Professor Gregory Gellene, compared the course grades and the success rates of students using MindTap General Chemistry with those using alternative e-learning platforms. The percentage of students using MindTap General Chemistry who received a course grade of A or B more than doubled from 32 percent to 66 percent. The percentage of students earning less than a C was reduced almost threefold, from 39 percent to 14 percent. This resulted in a course success rate of 87 percent, an increase of 26 percentage points over those using a leading competitor's product.
MindTap is a fully built course experience that integrates reading, homework, quizzing and multimedia assets into an engaging pedagogically sound learning experience for students. The outcome-driven learning path offers instructors the ability to customize courses, with personalized options for students. MindTap products are available for more than 650 courses spanning more than 50 disciplines.
"MindTap activates student learning to improve academic outcomes and engagement in today's chemistry courses," said Professor Gellene, Ph.D, Professor, Texas Tech University. "The positioning of focused interactive simulations and tutorials between relatively short segments of text draws the student into reading the text before attempting the assignments rather than using the text as a last resort."
"The key driver of our product creation is to develop technology that enables students to better interact with their learning material, thus improving outcomes," said Jim Donohue, Chief Product Officer. "The MindTap platform was developed based on student feedback and adapts to the way students learn. This study underscores our efforts and we commend the Texas Tech chemistry students on their hard work."
