PLANTATION, Fla., July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 700 students from 52 high schools throughout the United States traveled to Buffalo, New York to compete in the 2017 Mu Alpha Theta National Math Competition. American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida was represented by 38 students competing in the 42 individual events and 9 team events. American Heritage took 1st place in 19 events and had 8 perfect scores. After the 3-day competition, American Heritage School of Plantation finished in 1st place overall.
According to the Director of the AHS Math Competition team, Mr. Rick Rovere, American Heritage has created an environment where liking math and being good at it is respected and appreciated. "As we practice harder and more often, we have gotten stronger and improved as a team each year; the current team is the best we have ever had."
"Throughout most of my life, I've been the only one who cares about math as much as I do," says sophomore Connor Gordon who earned two 1st places, a 2nd and 3rd in the geometry exams at the national competition. "But when I came to American Heritage, I met so many other students who feel the same way I do about math and who enjoy it as much as I do so I can talk to them about it, and we help each other with things we don't understand," he adds.
American Heritage's math competition team head coach, Dr. Radleigh Santos, is an alumni of the school and went on to graduate from MIT in 2002. "We are a place where the top math students know they can go to learn the most mathematics, and be the most successful students on a perpetually 1st place winning team," Dr. Santos says.
AHS students on the math team attend classes for at least two hours three days a week after school and on Saturdays. They learn the competition curriculum and other advanced topics at a fast pace in order for the students to be fully prepared by the first competition in January.
Max Ranis, an AHS senior, and one of the perfect scorers on the Calculus BC exam, says, "The AHS math team is competitive, just like any athletic team, and we know that to be our best we have to do our part individually and as part of the team. We support each other, and it's common for us to call each other to review math problems to stay sharp and prepare for competition."
According to Dr. Santos, students who have graduated from the AHS math program have gone on to PhD programs in mathematics at many of the top universities in the country.
